Key Milestones in the History of Essex Bank
1851
Founded by a group of shipmasters, businessmen, and entrepreneurs to serve the needs of the community, especially those involved in the maritime trade.
1995
Launched the Community Investment Program, becoming the first bank in Connecticut to voluntarily donate a percentage of its profits to local non-profits.
1999
Expanded its services by adding a trust department.
2025
Updated name to Essex Bank to better reflect its growing suite of financial services.
The First President of Essex Bank
Henry L. Champlin, the first president of the Bank, was one of the most accomplished sea captains of his time. He was shipmaster and owner of the first London line of packets from New York, of which he was commander for many years, never losing a vessel. After retiring from seafaring, he continued as a successful ship owner and built a beautiful home on Champlin Square in Essex.
